It is easy to lose stuff or settings in Second Life.
The Signature series solve the problem in this way:
Command HUD v5.00.00 RC and above:
Note 1: If you are wearing any restraints (e.g. gags or cuffs), they will not detach immediately upon HUD detach (as in the past). Instead, you will receive a warning if the HUD is not re-worn in 45 seconds, and if it is still not worn after 1 minute 15 seconds, only then the restraints will detach. Changes from v.4: Changes to owner list, gender, command channels, etc. will no longer trigger the red dot save button. These are now automatically saved and will be automatically recovered when you relog after a crash or disconnect from SL. |

Command HUD v4.10.00 RC and above: Similar to HUD v5.00.00, but the red dot will also appear for important changes like owner list, command channel, gender, etc. These are auto-saved in the v.5. |
Command HUD v4.0614 RC and below:

When you re-wear or relog, you will not receive any confirmation that your data has been saved - as there is no way a script can tell that (HUD v4.10 onwards will tell you that the save process is completed, but there is no guarantee that it was successful). The only way to tell is to manually check whether the last change you did (e.g. owner change) is still preserved on your HUD when you wear it again. And there is a small chance that if the Second Life servers are under too much strain at the time, your changes would be lost, and not saved.
So if you check and the change is still there, congrats, the save was successful. This means that if all goes well, the next time you crash or disconnect while in this session, the HUD will revert to this state. Now you see why it's important to save your settings as you go along.
